Like all mechanical components in an engine, your crankshaft wears over time and this is why there may come a time when it needs some machining. When you're putting thousands of kilometers on an engine, the end play between the crankshaft and the bearings increases. When the “fit” between the bearings and the crank isn’t perfect it lowers the oil pressure. The less oil to the crank the faster it can wear out.
