Is your F-150 misfiring or running rough?

5.0L Coyote Engine in 2011–2014 Ford F-150's
If you own a 2011–2014 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L Coyote engine and are experiencing engine misfires, you’re not alone. These trucks are known to have a specific issue related to the intake valves that can cause frustrating performance problems.
Common issue
The issue lies in the intake valves. On these model years, the intake valve faces can develop abnormal and excessive wear over time. This wear leads to leakage at the valve seat, ultimately resulting in engine misfires. Ford has since updated the design, replacing the original valves with hardened versions to prevent this issue in future repairs.
How do we know what's wrong?
At CETUS Automotive, we follow a thorough diagnostic process:
- PCM Scan – We begin by scanning the vehicle’s Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to identify any misfires by cylinder.
- Compression Test – This test checks the engine’s ability to build pressure in each cylinder.
- Leakdown Test – We follow up with a leakdown test to determine if any air is leaking past the valves, confirming intake valve leakage.
If valve leakage is confirmed, the next step is to remove both cylinder heads and perform a full overhaul.
What’s Involved in the Repair?
To access the cylinder heads, the cab must be removed from the frame—this is a major job that typically takes about three days of labour. Most shops outsource their cylinder head repair to third-party machine shops, which can add an additional week or more to the turnaround time.
